Broken (explained).

It was an August afternoon in 2003 when my parents said,

"Girls, we need to talk." Those five words never meant anything

good. My dad sat between my sister and I on the couch, and my

mom sat on the loveseat. We sat there for a while in silence

until my dad said, “It’s your show, Julie.” Then my mom said,

“Girls, your father and I are getting a divorce.” My sister and I

started crying. My dad started crying. My mom just sat there

crocheting. Phrases such as “We still love each of you” and “It’s

not your fault” fluttered through the air. Shortly after my dad

moved out. Every other weekend custody started. Holidays

were spent at one house or the other.

This series is entitled “Broken.” People always seem surprised when a tragedy like divorce happens in a family, but there are always subtle signs. Things are never what they seem.

The format is horizontal to contrast with the broken-ness in each image. The colors are desaturated and slightly edited to show that the announcement of divorce was just the beginning; the actual event was just the first thunder clap of the storm.

This series was inspired by Emotionlessness by Gwendolyn Kraehenfuss, broken dishes of summer oh nine, and my parents’ divorce.

*I love my entire family very much. They are great people (read about them here). This is just something I needed to do to help release emotions that have been building up for years. It is the first time that I have artistically expressed how I felt about this subject. So for me it represents divorce, but for you it could mean something else. No family is perfect.

I went to Idaho Falls to hang out with my friend Sammi for the last time before she goes on her 18 month mission for the LDS (Mormon) church. It was nice to see her as well as some friends from my first semester here.
It was especially nice to be around people who were completely unrelated to all of the stress and drama that has been going on this semester in Rexburg.

Boyfriend took me to the Benson before he had to go to work because he knows how much I love the greenhouses.

We had some more time so we went to the taxidermy room, too.

Photo-a-day.

A week ago (Friday November 13) we were given the assignment to make a photo a day for my Color Photography class in order to create a photo journal. I have been e-mailing my images to my teacher, and meant to post them on my blog everyday. So far I have failed. But I am going to start at the beginning and post them.

This assignment lasts two weeks and a day.

For the first week of this assignment I decided to go off of "The best camera is the one you have with you." So I haven't been carrying around my bulky and heavy DSLR (I still love you Baby Nikon). Instead I have been using the gadgets pictured above. Because I always have at least one of them with me.

I just turned this in today for a mixed light assignment.
I think we were supposed to take our pictures outside at dusk with some sort of other light source. But I couldn't think of a good enough idea that would also reflect my personal style.
I think long exposures can be way sweet, but I think a lot of them look like they could be done by any given semi-skilled photographer. It is a challenge and I applaud those who are successful in their night photography ventures.
